Non-hormonal coil
The non-hormonal coil, also known as the copper coil or IUD (intrauterine device) is a small T-shaped piece of copper and plastic. Once fitted inside the womb it can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years.
It can also be fitted for emergency contraception, and stay in as your ongoing method.
To get the coil fitted, speak to your GP or a sexual health clinic

Getting started
You’ll need to go to a GP or clinic to have the coil fitted.
For emergency contraception
The non-hormonal coil can be used as emergency contraception if you get it fitted within 5 days after unprotected sex, or within 5 days of your earliest predicted date of ovulation.
It is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy and the most effective emergency contraception.
As you need to have it fitted by a doctor or a nurse practitioner with specialist training, it’s more complicated to arrange than simply ordering the emergency contraceptive pill. But a big benefit is that it can be left in place to provide ongoing contraception.
To get a coil fitted, contact a sexual health clinic for an appointment.
